Canoe slalom athletes to race for Junior World Team selection on Kananaskis River - May 25th, 2012

OTTAWA, ON – Junior canoe slalom athletes seeking selection to the Junior World Championships team will race off at Canoe Meadows on the Kananaskis River in Alberta this weekend.

The Junior and Under 23 World Championships will take place from July 11 to 15 in Wausau, USA. The Under 23 contingent of the team was already selected at senior team selection trials in April. At those trials, junior athletes Jazmyne Denhollander of Chilliwack, BC and Liam Smedley of Ottawa, ON posted results that qualified them for the under 23 team and were pre-selected to the junior team based on their medal performances at the 2011 National Championships.

Selection for the remaining junior team spots will be determined over the course of four runs. Athletes will count their best three rankings and their time on their four run will be used should a tie in points occur. Two runs will take place on Saturday and the final two runs will take place Sunday on a changed-up course.

The competition is sanctioned by CanoeKayak Canada and the Alberta Whitewater Association, which is proudly celebrating its 40th year of operation. Alberta Slalom Canoe Kayak is hosting the event.
