Junior Team Trials Press Release
The CanoeKayak Canada
Jr National Slalom Team Trials held at the Canoe Meadows Slalom race
course on the Kananaskis River in Alberta over the May 26-27 weekend was
full of drama as Canada’s best junior canoe/kayak athletes competed for
a spot to represent Canada at the Junior World Whitewater Slalom
Championships this summer. With only 3 berths available in the K-1
(single kayak) and C-1 (single canoe) events in either the men’s or
women’s classes there wasn’t much room for a mistake over the 2 days.
Complicating this was the fact that based on past results 2 athletes,
Jasmyne Denhollander and Liam Smedley had secured 2 of those spots in
K-1W and C-1M.
In
the C-1 class Zachary Zwanenburg from Cornwall, Ontario battled out for
top spot with Ryley Penner from Lundbreck, Alberta. Noted more for the
Cornwall freestyle program and not slalom, Zachary showed his mettle in
garnering the top spot, by wining 2 of the 3 runs they competed in.
Rounding out the team with Liam and Zach will be Sam Fletcher from
Chilliwack, BC as Ryley declined his spot to concentrate on his kayak
event at the World’s.
In
the K-1 Men’s class, Ryley Penner was not to be denied top spot.
Winning 3 of the 4 heats Ryley dominated the event over Valleyfield
Quebec’s Samuel Primeau, Innisfail Alberta’s Levi Severtson and Zachary
Zwanenburg. Last year Ryley stormed into the Junior class and surprised
everyone taking the top spot in K-1 Jr Men’s in his first year of
eligibility as a 15 year old. Ryley showed this was no fluke with his
excellent technical paddling and fast times securing his position as
team leader for 2012.
With
Jasmyne already having secured the top spot in K-1W, there were only 2
spots available among the 4 women competing. Two other competitors at
the races are still Cadets and not eligible to attend the Jr Worlds. One
of those cadets, Hannah Penner from Lundbreck, Alberta consistently won
2nd place in all 4 heats and would have been named to the
team but she will have to wait her chance until next year to join her
brother on the team. Aurelie Rondeau from Valleyfield Quebec won 2 heats
and and Aleisha Greve from Strathroy, Ontario and Veronica Oczkowski
from Pincher Creek, Alberta each won a heat. Based upon total points
Aurelie and Aliesha were named to the Junior National Team for 2012 to
join Jasmyne.
Aliesha
also competed in C-1 Women and was solid throughout all 4 heats over
the weekend with her single blade to earn the only spot in this class.
To round out the Junior Squad, Ben Lapointe from Saskatoon, SK and Sam
Fletcher will be representing Canada in the C-2 class

OTTAWA, ON – Junior canoe slalom athletes seeking selection to the Junior World Championships team will race off at Canoe Meadows on the Kananaskis River in Alberta this weekend.
The Junior and Under 23 World Championships will take place from July 11 to 15 in Wausau, USA. The Under 23 contingent of the team was already selected at senior team selection trials in April. At those trials, junior athletes Jazmyne Denhollander of Chilliwack, BC and Liam Smedley of Ottawa, ON posted results that qualified them for the under 23 team and were pre-selected to the junior team based on their medal performances at the 2011 National Championships.
Selection for the remaining junior team spots will be determined over the course of four runs. Athletes will count their best three rankings and their time on their four run will be used should a tie in points occur. Two runs will take place on Saturday and the final two runs will take place Sunday on a changed-up course.
The competition is sanctioned by CanoeKayak Canada and the Alberta Whitewater Association, which is proudly celebrating its 40th year of operation. Alberta Slalom Canoe Kayak is hosting the event.

Alberta Team after AB Cup 1
Please see the online spreadsheet to find your results from Alberta Cup #1 and where you currently sit with regards to the Provincial Team. Remember that you need two A-Team percentages to make the A-Team. Once National Junior Team Trial results come in, we will add both National events to this list.

AB Cup #1 - Results
In true Alberta fashion the weekend started off with snow on Saturday and a high of 2 degrees! The morning session was cancelled and we opted for some classroom learning about Polo skills from Keegan Smith. The afternoon was somewhat better weather, 3 degrees, with a bit less wind and rain. As always, the athletes were troopers and got down to working on technique.
Saturday evening we had a great BBQ and hot tub at the Lee/Penner's. Thanks Chuck and Sue for your hospitality! We followed up dinner with an evening hike in the foothills. Great scenery, turkeys, deer and Limber Pine accentuated the hike.
Sunday morning started gloriously with sun and calm. Thanks to Joanne and Matt for getting the day off on an equally great foot, by feeding us royally. It was an absolutely great day of racing on Boulder Run below the Old Man Dam. The water was low, so it gave us a chance to see how the venue would look for Alberta Summer Games at the end of July.
The race was hotly contested in several classes. Ryley Penner took the junior men's kayak class ahead of Levi and Sam in what will be battle in the making for the Junior National Team in three weeks, May 26/27 at the Kananaskis. In K1 men open Paul Manning-Hunter showed his form in preparation for the World Cup season in a months time. Jessica Groeneveld and Haley Daniels were equally on form in K1W and C1W making us rethink our current interclass percentages. Cadet kayak was won in consistent form by our dynamic duo of Hannah Penner and Darius Ramrattan.
Thanks to all the volunteers, judges, club coaches, and athletes for a great weekend. See the individual race results below. Alberta Team results to follow shortly.

Penguin Race - wrap-up
Congratulations to all that participated in the 4th annual Penguin Race! When I started this race 4years ago I had no idea it would take on a life of it's own. We have been increadibly fortunate with the weather, water and great people!
This year's race was no exception! Perfect sunny day, lots of great volunteers, helping to set up, run the race, and feed us all. I was impressed by everyone's skills on the water, so early in the season, and appreciative of the older athlete's help with the kids! We had 30 competitor plus lots of parents and I think we set a record for most Penguin costumes this year too. If anyone has any good photos, you can post them on FB and tag Alberta Slalom Canoe Kayak, or email me.
Thank you to Rick Harland, and Brian Keating and the Calgary Zoo for the zoo tickets! Thank you to Aquabatics for the swag! Thanks to all the people who collect penguin paraphenalia and other prizes all year round! Thank you to all the volunteers who made the race go smooth and fed us!
See you all this weekend at the first Alberta Cup in Pincher Creek! There's going to be a big burger feast on Saturday night.
Here's the Penguin Race results.
